Mullumbimby Residence

CREATIVE OVERVIEW : MULLUMBIMBY RESIDENCE : NORTH COAST ARCHITECTS

This family residence located within the Northern NSW Byron Bay hinterland town of Mullumbimby has been designed by North Coast architects Davis Architects to respond to the sub-tropical north coast climate.

The original “Queenslander” style weatherboard house was moved to the site in the 1990s from Lismore.  Davis Architects completely rearranged and extended the floor plan to create a line of bedrooms with a master suite at one end, and a bathroom, laundry and outdoor shower at the other.

Open plan indoor and outdoor living areas, strategically positioned on the north side of the building, promote cross ventilation and draw in prevailing cooling summer breezes.  The unobtrusive pallette of white and timber lends the home a “beach-chic” look, while giving the owner license to be bold with furnishing colours.  Matching the home’s new timbers to the existing eclectic mix of tallowwood, blackbutt, ironbark and spotted gum was central to the home’s overall cohesiveness.  A practical walk-through shower between the laundry and bathroom allows kids to wash their muddy feet and enter the house sparkling clean.  Wide doors by the spa bath slide open to bring a view of the garden into the bathroom.

The house visually connects and extends itself into the surrounding landscape, creating a sense of calm, openness and space appropriate to the north coast lifestyle.
